**OUR CAMPUS MINISTRY BEGINS AT UAFS**

**David Chadwell**

Derrick Jones is now a member of the team here.  With Derrick's arrival begins a new form of campus ministry outreach.  The objective of this campus ministry is to offer Christian activities in numerous forms that will encourage students in their spiritual growth and development.

Derrick moved to Fort Smith late last week.  As of Tuesday (September 2), he acquired an apartment.  We encourage you to extend Christian friendship and help to him.  He comes to us having worked in the campus ministry program in Emporia, Kansas, the past two years.

Many elements in his background should bless our work as well as the campus ministry outreach.  He is a graduate of Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas.  While a student there, he was treasurer for one of the clubs, coordinated a missions study, coordinated lectureships for students (for two years), and coordinated local tent meetings (two years).

After graduation, he worked for the AIM program (based on the ministry designed by Sunset School of Preaching) doing inner city work in San Antonio, Texas.  His childhood was spent in Clovis, New Mexico, and Friona, Texas.

The beginning of this new campus ministry outreach is the result of much work and planning done by many.  Presently, the Mulberry, Roland, Valley View, Pleasant Valley, and Dayton congregations have given or will give financial assistance to this work.  Representatives from these congregations have worked together to make the UAFS campus ministry a reality.  The West-Ark elders agreed to match the finances these congregations contribute to help support the work.

Among those who actively work together in creating the initial plans for the UAFS campus ministry are Ron Orick, Ron Lenderman, Earl Flood, Bill Dickey, Ron Griffin, Joe Bridges, and Kaelin Schaper.  Numerous others have shown interest and given encouragement.

Efforts are currently underway to acquire property to house this ministry.

This fall for the first time, on-campus housing is available to those who wish to attend the University of Arkansas Fort Smith.  This change plus the continuing efforts to transform UAFS into a four-year student program presents new opportunities for a campus ministry program.  Our objective is to provide spiritual nurturing for Christians during a critical moment of personal transition.

Your prayers and encouragements are needed and valued!  Welcome, Derrick!  May God use you--and us--effectively as we seek to glorify Him!

**Youth and Family Life Ministry**

"A Spirit-filled Fall"

This September is filled with a lot of opportunities for our families to get to know each other better on a spiritual level. I want to encourage all of you to take part.

We kick things off this week with our new 12-week class, True Love Waits - God's Will for My Dating Life. Parents are certainly encouraged to come take part in this class as we take a look at the promises of God versus the lies of Satan. This will be a very straightforward class that will encourage teens to look beyond the "rules" to the rewards and promises of God's plan for their life.

Then, we have a great weekend planned for the Senior High this Friday - Sunday. We will travel to Green Valley Bible Camp for the annual Senior High Retreat. The theme this year will focus on accountability. We all need someone to hold us accountable to our commitment to follow Christ at all costs.

Many parents will travel with us this weekend to the retreat. What a great thing it will be for parents to learn how to become an accountability partner to their son or daughter! Many blessings will come from our time together this weekend.

Finally, Marshall and I are finalizing plans for our 10th Annual Crosswalk Youth Rally which will take place in Rogers, AR, on Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21. Our own David Boozer will be there as one of our class teachers, along with several other area teachers from Harding University, Texas, Missouri, etc.

As you adjust to the fall schedule, school events, and work commitments, I know you have the opportunity to be overwhelmed. Be careful not to over-commit and be sure to make room for the events that will provide spiritual growth for your family.

*Due to three all weekend events this month, Brad's office schedule for September will be Wed, Thurs, Friday, and Sunday afternoons.
