**Perhaps the Hardest Thing to Believe**
By David Chadwell

There was a time “when I went to church” that I wore the best I had.  There was a time when I went to a wedding or a funeral that I wore the best I had.  There was even a time when I went on a long trip (especially if I went by train or plane) that I wore the best I had.  In those days, there were many occasions that called for wearing the best that I had.

No more!  Now ‘casual’ is the appropriate attire on many occasions, and ‘casual’ is defined by the one who wears—not the occasion.  We used to show respect by what we wore.  If most of us declare anything by our clothing now, wonder what it is?

When God looks on us, He sees us for what we are. Clothing does not hide sin or conceal faithlessness.  God sees character flaws, not skin blemishes.  He sees the negative emotions we try to hide.  He sees lousy attitudes we conceal.  He sees genuine heart motives.  Every moment of every day in every situation, He sees the ‘real me’.

The only being in the whole world that knows the total truth about us as individuals is God.  Our wife or our husband knows us well, but not like God does.  Our kids know many of our inconsistencies, but God knows all of them.  Our best friend knows our imperfections, but not as accurately as God knows.  He knows all we think.  He knows the correct answer to every ‘why’?  He knows the actual motives in every situation—even when we manage to deceive ourselves.  He even knows the controlled but unsaid.

Yet, the most amazing thing is this: He has all that accurate knowledge of us as individuals, and He still loves each of us as a person.  He is able to forgive me when I cannot forgive myself.  He can forget what I did when I cannot.  He can ignore weaknesses that haunt me.  When I fail, He will let me begin again as if I never made the mistake.  When I absolutely hold myself in contempt, He still cares about me.

When I arrogantly claim I am not responsible for my faults, He can inform me of the worst thing I have done—yet, He still loves me.   When I condemn others for their flaws, He shakes His head and, in love, hopes I repent (He sees the two-by-four in my eye while I look at specks in your eye).  He sees my anxieties when I justify them, and, in love, hopes I heed Jesus’ call to come to him.  He saves me in all my imperfections because He loves me.  He asks of us but three core things:  (a) let Him be our measuring stick;  (b) trust what He did for us in Christ; and (c) love Him in return for His love for us.  Being flawless is not a divine expectation.  Human flawlessness is never an option.

All I can do is trust Him to love me as much as He says He does.  My mistakes may be bigger than your ability to forgive me.  However, my mistakes are never bigger than His forgiveness.  He can actually love me when I refuse to love myself.

Perhaps this is the greatest expression of faith: to believe God loves me as much as He says He does.  Only then will I forgive me because He first forgave me.

• Aline Story is at Beverly Health Care for rehab, and is doing well.

Donna will stay overnight at MD Anderson and then be released, but stay in the Houston area for about a week while she heals.  No radiation or
chemotherapy is expected to be needed.

**Notes of Thanks**
To the congregation at West-Ark:
Thank you so much for the cards, phone calls, words of encouragement and concern; and most important, your prayers. I was very nervous about my surgery and you all
helped alleviate my fears. The prayer pager was fabulous. Once we turned it on after the surgery it “beeped” non-stop. Mom, Dad and I not only felt encouraged but it was fun to wait and listen for it to go off again and know that someone was thinking of us!!
In Him,
Rachelle Pratt

Dear Family,
I just want to thank all of you for you prayers regarding Hunter’s illness. I want to solicit your continued prayers on his behalf. Even though we are home, he still has a far
way to go in his recovery process. He is still a very weak, sick little boy. I am continuing to update his website daily. Please check it and sign his guestbook. It is so encouraging to us. We love you all so much! Hunter’s website is: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/hunterhesslen

Norma Luna is going to teach us how on Saturday, November 4th in the Family Life Center. A Sign-up sheet is posted in the foyer. Call Glenda Lewis or Donna Lindgren for
more information.

**Fall Festival**
We are changing things for our fall festival this year by having all of our fun-filled booths Bible based.  The kids can have fun while remembering some of their favorite Bible
stories! This will be a wonderful time of fun, food, and fellowship for our entire church family and friends, but we need your help as booth operators. We need small toys from fast food, birthday and party leftovers.  We also need cash to purchase some things in bulk.

**Van Drivers Needed**
If you can help with driving a church van on a rotating basis please call Rod Jones or the church office. We are in dire need of your help. The drivers drive on a rotation basis,
one week at a time. Your week would include Sunday morning, Sunday evening and Wednesday evening.

**Adopt A Child**
We feel this is the most effective way to show the children that come on the van that we love them and care about them. Many of them have never been to church so we
want them to learn about worship and showing reverence for God. This is much easier to accomplish one on one than a few people taking care of all of the children. Can you help “our kids” learn about Christianity? Call Jack Lewis at 459-0168.
• Have him/her sit with you during church.
• Get to know him/her.
• Try to do something special with the child every once in a while.
• Do something special for his/her birthday and Christmas.
• Most of all, take an interest in him/her.

**LTC Sign Up**
This will end soon. Sign up on a paper form available in the lobby or on the church’s website. http://www.westark.org
Contact Clark Risley or Nancy Smith with any questions.

**Reservations for FLC and Annex**
Please remember to call the office when you are planning anything for the FLC or Annex. Reservations have to be made.

**Family Life Ministry**
By Brad Pistole

I know it’s hard to believe, but Leadership Training for Christ deadlines are already on top of us. LTC doesn’t take place until April 7th, 2007, but sign-ups for LTC are taking
place right now. And the deadline for all events is October 31st.

If you have never been to LTC before, you should really consider going with us this year. We will be taking a large group from West-Ark to participate in various leadership training events such as: puppets, dramas, choir, scripture reading, song leading, etc.

Shanna Davis will be leading the Jr. High and Sr. High Choir again this year, and she would love to have you as part of the group. Just this past week, two more Sr. High students signed up, so it’s not too late.

You will be out of school for Good Friday on Friday, April 6th. We will all leave for Tulsa, OK around noon on that day and spend the evening checking into our hotels, getting set up at the LTC headquarters, and fellowshipping with each other. Most of the LTC events will then take place throughout the day on Saturday, April 7th, and we will return to Fort Smith later that evening.

This is a great program that is designed to help you develop several different skills that you will be able to use throughout your life in service to God and others. It’s also a great event, and experience for our families. Please consider taking part in LTC 2007. Sign-up today!
