**Following His Call to Houston**

John Carson is a former member of the Lions for Christ and the West-Ark Youth Group.  After graduation from the University of Arkansas in May 2010, John spent the summer in Houston working with the Impact Houston Church of Christ.  This was his third effort with the inner-city mission church.  In the summer of 2008 and 2009, John worked at Impact as an intern.  The experience has shaped John’s future, and he has expressed a sincere desire to minister to the inner-city of Houston.

John has made an “impact on Impact” as well.  The leaders of the Impact Houston Church of Christ have invited John to serve as the full-time high school minister.  Because Impact is essentially a domestic mission work, John will need to raise funds like most missionaries.  West-Ark, the congregation that has nurtured John from his youth, has very fittingly agreed to serve as his supporting church.  John will be spending the fall raising funds.  His plan is to begin his full-time work in Houston in January if sufficient funds are secured.

Please consider supporting John and praying for his ministry.  He has set up a blog to enable us to follow his experiences while he is fundraising and once he begins his work in Houston.  His blog at followinghiscalltohouston.blogspot.com will tell you more about his decision to serve at Impact Houston and the nature of the work there.

John will preach in the Sunday AM worship on October 3rd.  He has prepared a sermon from the book of Jonah.  Please be sure and encourage John this Sunday and throughout the course of his ministry and training.

Below are some of the ways you can pray for the mission in SE Asia:

- Church leaders from across SE Asia as they gather for a time of prayer and  planning in November

- The Carroll family as they care for Chris’s parents in AR

- College students at the Ram University Christian Center

- Members of the Kumphawaphi congregation as they plan a campaign for serving and evangelizing their community

**Blue Jeans Sunday -- 10.10.10**

Our Goal: 1010 pairs of jeans

bring them . wear them . serve in them

What are you doing on Blue Jeans Sunday?

If you haven’t already done so, please sign a project list if you intend to work!  This is very important.  All workers will be provided with lunch, and our cooks need to know how much food to prepare.

The work lists for CURE, THE HOPE CHEST, and LFC Campus House are almost filled!  However, we really could use help in the following areas:

Heart to Heart Pregnancy Support Center

Project Leaders: Harold & Linda Davis

We need workers with even a slightly green thumb to help replant a 12 X 15 ft. indoor atrium.  Someone is laying out the plants as they need to be planted.  All we have to do is follow directions and dig a few holes.  We only have 3 workers at this point.

Community Rescue Mission

Project Leaders: Jack & Glenda Lewis

We have enough volunteers to prepare the meal, now we need about 6-7 people to serve.  All it requires is that you can speak a kind word to someone who is far less fortunate than you are and be able to wield a serving spoon.  No hard hat required :~)

West-Ark Building

Project Leaders: Barney Puckett and Mike Burkett

We need men who can use a power washer or a paint brush.  Not a lot of training is required.  If you can hold a watering hose, you can power wash!!  We only have 1 brave soul on the list now!

2010 Visitation

Project Leader: Joyce Chadwell

Please sign up in pairs.  We need 20 people to make 10 visits to some of our shut-ins. Each pair will be given a small denim bag to fill with useful items for their visit. (We’ll help with items for filling the bags!)

Desserts for Sunday Night

At 6 PM on Oct. 10 we’ll gather in the Family Life Center for worship, watch a photo recap of the day’s events, and have a fellowship meal.  If you can bring a dessert, please sign the list.

**Widows and Widowers**

Marvin & Bobbie will be hosting us this month.  Bobbie will be serving her world-famous Beans & Cornbread.  You won’t want to miss this.  Van will leave Annex at 11:30 Saturday, October 2.  Call Janice or Mary if you need transportation to the Annex.

**No Car Clinic for October— we will return November 6.**

**Directory Photos **

There are still LOTS of photos to be taken! The deadline has been extended through Blue Jeans Sunday, October 10.

**JOY Bunch Fun Trip!**

Join us as we travel to Branson, MO on October 8, 2010 to watch Ray Stevens perform in the Welk Theatre. Transportation, performance, hotel accommodations, and evening meal for the low, low price of $75 per person based on double occupancy.  Payment must be turned in NO LATER than Wednesday, September 29, to Winston or Danna Turpin, Genneil Nye, or Lynn Dickey in the church office. First come, first serve basis.  We’ll meet at the building at 9:30 a.m. on October 8th!

WAYG Class – Sunday, October 3, 9:30-10:30 AM

We’re beginning NEW classes this Sunday.  The High School class will be taught by John Carson and Kent Snider,  who will be teaching based on the book, “The Barbarian Way.”  The Jr. High class will be taught by Brad Moore and Joe Morgan, who will be teaching based on the book, “Be The Wave.”  Both resources are excellent and use lots of Biblical principles and material to help in spiritual growth. Bring your Bible and get ready for these great classes!

Parents’ Class – Sunday, October 3, 9:30-10:30 AM

Rick will begin a new series this Sunday, based on the book “Almost Christian:  What the faith of our teenagers is telling the American church.”  It will be challenging, informative, and hopefully become a call-to-action.  This Sunday, we’ll discuss “Becoming Christian-ish.”  Bring your Bibles, coffee, and insights as we begin a brand new study!  This is open to ANY and ALL parents (not just parents of teens).

Paintball – Sunday, October 3, 1-4 PM

Don’t miss out on this annual event full of fellowship and PAINT!  Applications were emailed out, handed out last Wednesday in class and this morning.  There are also extra apps in the hanging files near the youth group bulletin board in the foyer.  Remember, this is a CASH ONLY activity and you MUST have all forms filled out to play.  EAT before you come, bring food with you, or buy food at the Paintball snack bar.

No WAYG Activity Tonight (due to the Paintball activity) – Sunday, October 3

The Journey – Wednesday, October 6, 7-8 PM

Don’t miss out as we lift our praises to God and share a message from His Word every Wednesday.  Bring a Bible and bring a friend!  We’ll continue our study of Moses on his journey, in answering God’s call.

SLAM Meeting – Wednesday, October 6, 2010

This meeting is open to ANY WAYG students who want to do MORE than just show up at an activity … you’ll have the opportunity to provide input, and also to learn more about leadership.  We’ll meet at 6 PM in the Youth Group room.

MOVE Advance – November 19-21, 2010

Make sure you have marked this weekend for one of the BIGGEST and MOST IMPORTANT events for our WAYG …  it’s our version of a retreat, except we ADVANCE!  Clint Askins, from the Littleton church in Denver, CO will be our speaker and Andy Spell, from the West Houston church in Houston, TX will be leading worship.  Trust me, you will want to make EVERY EFFORT to be a part of this phenomenal event.   Applications will be out soon!
