Open Eyes
"After he took his seat at the table with
them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave
it to them. Their eyes were opened and they
recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight."
- Luke 24:30-31
I really wish that Luke had recalled the
name of the other disciple with Cleopas. As it is,
we have to talk about Cleopas and "the other disciple"
when we remember this encounter with the resurrected
Christ. Cleopas and "the other disciple" are
depressed. Cleopas and "the other disciple" are
disappointed. Cleopas and "the other disciple"
meet a stranger on the way (they don't know it, but it's
Christ himself). Cleopas and "the other disciple"
seem a little annoyed that they have to tell this
stranger about recent events. They have to explain
that some of their fellow disciples are reporting that
the body of their crucified leader is missing and that
his tomb is empty, and there is even a report that he
might be alive, but no one has seen him.
The stranger (who is actually Christ)
calls Cleopas and "the other disciple" foolish and
dim-witted. Why would he say such a thing?
Because he believes that it is unnecessary for Cleopas
and "the other disciple" to be so negative. He
wonders why they don't read their Bibles. If they
would open them and open their hearts to what it is
really saying, then Cleopas and "the other disciple"
might not be so depressed, downcast, disappointed, and
discouraged so quickly.
Cleopas and "the other disciple" are
encouraged enough to invite the stranger to a
meal. No one has seen the Risen Jesus, but there's
something about the way this fellow traveler opens up
Scripture that gives them hope that it just might
happen. But it is time to eat and they ask their
guest to say grace and just when he's handing them a
chunk of fresh bread . . . that's when their eyes open
up and Cleopas and "the other disciple" see Jesus with
their own eyes.
I really wish Luke had recalled the name
of that "other disciple." Say, that other disciple
wouldn't happen to be you - would it? -- Chris

About a month ago, a group from West-Ark
traveled to Honduras for a mission trip. While there,
they served food to the "dump people"-- a tribe of
people who literally eat, work, live, and die at the
Tegucigalpa City Dump. Please join us on May 4 for Dump
Day 2011, a day of fasting and prayer for those who make
their homes in the City Dump. In addition, you can make
a donation to help Torch Missions (Marc Tindall)
establish a 3-acre vegetable garden at the dump. To
donate, just visit www.givebread.org on May 4. Bread for
a Hungry World has agreed to match all donations given
that day; or you can mail checks to Honduras Hope, P.O.
Box 9222, Columbus, MS 39705. Be sure to write
"For Dump Day" in the memo line. For more information
about Dump Day 2011, please visit the Dump Day booth in
the church foyer on Sunday, May 1 or talk with the
Bocksnick, Bice or Snider Families.

Clothing
Needed at The Hope Chest
The Hope Chest needs Spring/Summer
clothing for boys and girls -- sizes 4 thru 16. The need
is urgent! Our supply is almost depleted, and this
season just started. When you do your "spring cleaning,"
remember we can distribute those items your children
have outgrown or are no longer wearing.
JOY
Bunch Due to the many activities in
May--graduations, weddings, showers, end of school
activities--the regularly scheduled Joy Bunch meeting
will be canceled for one month only. We will not meet on
May 21, but will resume in June with a cookout.
Mother's
Day Cards These cards were a hit last
year! We'll have them in the foyer again on
Mother's Day, May 8. Pick up as many as you can
use. Find creative ways to bless others
during the week and invite them to worship with
us. The reverse side has a map to the building and
our worship times.
