Remember

By Chris Benjamin

Is God powerful enough to create a rock so heavy that even he cannot lift it?  Attempting to define the omnipotence of God, philosophers have mulled over this question for centuries.  From the vantage of logic, the question is impossible to answer in a way that affirms God's absolute power.  The faith response however affirms that God is able to do immeasurably more.

However, faith in God's ability isn't always the problem.  We may be fully convinced that God is greater and above all powers.  Our faith in God's ability to act may never wane.  Yet, how often do we fail to consider that God will act?  In other words, what if our problem is not faithlessness rather it is forgetfulness.

We become anxious and worried when we forget what God has done for us.  Israel rarely denied that God existed, but they often lost their way when they forgot what he had done to save them.  The church is constantly writing sermons, creeds, and lessons that testify to our belief in God (in detail) but too often we forget what he has done to save us through Jesus Christ.   Because we are products of the modern age of enlightenment, we have lost some of our ability to recognize and embrace the activity of God among us.  Perhaps we are rightly modest about claiming that everything is God's divine intervention.  So how do we develop the ability to speak of God's active work without embarrassing excessiveness?

Our problem is not a lack of faith but a loss of memory.  We will do well to remember what God has done.  Recalling to our collective memory the ways that God has saved and acted for good will give us confidence to express our expectation of how he will act in the future.

"Remember what happened in the past. Think about what took place long ago. I am God. There is no other God. I am God. There is no one like me." - Isaiah 46:9

Our summer Interns continue teaching today!  Make sure you're here for all the fun, festivities and learning!

We continue our study based on the book, "Radical."  Bring a Bible, bring a friend and be ready for God to challenge you!

Jr/Sr. Trip, Dates June 3-8, 2011
Each year, the Seniors invite the Juniors to join them on a Junior/Senior Trip so we can more intimately pass the torch within our youth group. Only the current Seniors and Juniors are invited to attend this special activity. We'll have plenty of time for some special memories together, some of them will be our Seniors' last as members of the youth group. As part of this trip (and because we can get LOTS of freebies!) we will visit the campuses of Oklahoma Christian, Lipscomb, Harding, Abilene and Lubbock. Some of the universities will provide a FREE meal for us (and we will spend the night on campus for FREE!) which makes this trip REALLY inexpensive.  We are planning to sneak in a quick visit to 6 Flags, to top it all off!  MAKE THE DECISION TO GO TODAY!  We'll leave at 5 PM on June 3 and return around 7:30 PM on June 8.

WAYG Family Clusters - Sunday, June 5, 2011, 6-8 PM
You won't want to miss out on this opportunity to fellowship with other youth group families that live in your geographical area.  PLEASE make it a point to be a part of this phenomenal gathering. Most groups have great food, awesome relationship-building fellowship and a devotional.  Look for an email from your host home as to what they need you to bring! (Oklahoma/Van Buren/Alma/North cluster - Brent & Carol Evans, Central Fort Smith cluster - Host Home Needed, East Fort Smith cluster - Greg & Tiffany Null, South Fort Smith cluster - Host Home Needed, Greenwood Cluster - Blake & Colleen Frost).  We will be rearranging which group you are in for the next meetings in August, so be on the lookout for an email with your new Cluster assignment.

Service Camp - Thursday, June 9, 9 AM-5 PM
Join us as we work together by serving and bringing God's love throughout the Fort Smith area.  Bring $5 for lunch. The times on this event may change, as we are looking at either heading to Joplin, MO or Denning, AR to help with tornado disaster relief for the day.

Soul Quest - Sunday, June 12-18 , 2011
Applications are due June 1!  We have over 60 who have signed up, even BEFORE the deadline... you will NOT want to miss out on this for ANYTHING!!  PLEASE let Rick know if you want to donate money for scholarships or if you need a scholarship. Open to all incoming 7th graders through 2011 graduating Seniors!  This week will be the BEST way to kick off your summer for God!

Bulgaria Mission Trip - June 22-July 6, 2011
We are still in need of funds for this trip.  See Rick or Rachel if you have the ability to help us complete our fundraising for this life-changing experience.
