This past week as I was thinking about the process that we are going through
at West-Ark to select additional Shepherd Leaders, a couple of verses came
to my mind.
First of all Hebrews 13:7, "Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God
to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith."
Our leaders should be held up as examples to be imitated; specifically,
their faith is singled out. Faith is an important characteristic to consider
as we think about men who are qualified to serve as an Elder. Our leaders
need to be men of faith so that we'll be able to follow their good example
of faith.
Secondly, "Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch
over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will
be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you."
The writer gives us imagery of the leaders keeping awake at night in their
concern for their people. "Over you" translates "for your souls." The
thought here is a reference to one's spiritual life and spiritual
well-being. Since these leaders must "give account" these men are concerned
for the deep needs of the congregation, not simply for what lies on the
surface.
With this in mind, consider Philippians 4:6-7, "Do not be anxious about
anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Church, since we need to be prayerful about the decisions that we make
we
have set aside 24 hours of prayer. This time is devoted to seeking God's
direction for the West-Ark congregation. (See David's article this week.)
Please make plans now to come and participate as we prayerfully seek His
will together during the 24 hours beginning Friday, July 7, 6:00 a.m. at the
West-Ark building. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to participate. A
sign-up list can be found in the foyer.
See you in Bible Class!
