Parents of teenagers face marital and family issues daily that are unique to
this particular adult life stage. Teenagers desire freedom with increased
privileges
but how many of these teens are willing to accept the
responsibility that comes with it all? So, as a parent, how much freedom
should we allow our teens?
Just as parents are dealing with the increasing independence of their teens,
they are facing the increasing dependence of their parents. Mid-life parents
truly are in the middle. Another issue often found on opposite ends of the
spectrum deals with the fact that just as dads are ready and willing to turn
back to their family, the teenagers are working toward more distance.
Then, to top it off
since the empty nest is not far away, feelings of
anxiousness regarding the strength of the relationship with their spouse is
a natural consequence. The fact is - parents of teens are also looking for
ways to nurture their own marriages. The life stage of Adolescence and
Middlescence have been studied extensively - but seldom together. Oddly
enough, there are similar life issues between mid-life adults and
adolescents which increase the pressure and complexity for parents of teens.
Last Sunday morning, I began a new Bible class called, "Growing
Together with Your Teens: Studies for Parents of Teens." Its not too late
for you to take an active part in this class. The class format is
discussion-driven which allows plenty of time for participation.
This study will help give a biblical perspective, and you will learn many practical ways to deal with various areas of family life.
There will be activities for class members to do alone, as couples, in small
groups, and with the entire group together.
The rubber meets the road in this class as we nurture growth in our
relationship with the Lord, each other, and our teens. It is my prayer that
"Growing Together with Your Teens: Studies for Parents of Teens" will be a
source of encouragement for West-Ark parents.
See you in Bible Class this week.
