WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

A few weeks ago I read about a Hollywood, Florida, middle school teacher who had surrendered to police on charges of having an 18-month affair with a male student. The 44-year-old teacher is accused of indecent assault, unlawful sexual activity with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She allegedly began the affair with the boy, now 16, when he was a 14-year-old student. She allegedly gave the boy drugs, including cocaine and marijuana, and as much as $100 a day in spending money. When the boy told his mom about the affair, he said it was consensual. County school officials were already reeling from the recent controversy over two high school teachers who were caught in a raid on a private sex club and suspended from their classrooms.

Whenever I read news stories like this I wonder, "What are these people thinking?" And then I remember some relevant Scripture that helps me put it all into perspective … like this from 2 Timothy 3:13-15, . . . while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

The thought here is that Timothy must continue in the teachings that he had learned and of which he had "become convinced," rather than being led astray by these impostors. Timothy had learned these Scriptural teachings from his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice (1:5) right from the time he was a baby. Jewish children were customarily taught the law at an early age, and they often had parts of it committed to memory. "The holy Scriptures" refers to what we now call the Old Testament Scriptures, which were able to make him "wise" for salvation. They disciplined him in obedience to God and also pointed forward to the coming Messiah, through whom salvation would come.

MAYBE THERE'S A LESSON IN HERE FOR US. Are you teaching your children and grandchildren what’s really important in this life from God’s Word?

See you in Bible Class!!!
