Lesson Six

In this lesson we will note the things necessary for tabernacle/temple worship in Old Testament Israel. We will note the things necessary for Christian worship on the first day of the week. The contrast between the two should be evident.

Necessities for Old Testament Israel's tabernacle/temple worship:

  1. Judaism's temple worship required a high priest, priests, offerings, a tabernacle or temple, furnishings, the bread of presence, and a specific site for worship.

  2. The temple furnishings included a washing laver, an altar for animal sacrifices, and altar for incense, a table for the bread of presence, a lamp stand with lamps, a mercy seat, and the ark of the covenant.

  3. Common necessities included water for washings, wood for sacrifices, anointing oil, and incense.

Read the following references and state something significant about:

  1. The high priest:

    1. Leviticus 9:8-16

    2. Leviticus 16

    3. Leviticus 21:10-15

  2. The priests

    1. Exodus 29:1-9

    2. Leviticus 21:16-24

  3. Offerings (list the kinds of offerings):

    1. Leviticus 1 through 5

    2. Exodus 29:38-46

Necessities for Christian worship to occur in the New Testament:

In the New Testament, did Christian worship require:

  1. A human high priest?

  2. A human priesthood that was distinct from the worshippers?

  3. A specific geographical place for acceptable worship to occur?

  4. Animal offerings?

  5. Fruit and grain offerings?

  6. Incense?

  7. A purified facility?

  8. Furnishings for that purified facility?

  9. Support necessities such as wood, oil, and incense?

What contrast would you make between the temple worship of Judaism and the worship of Christians?

Which worship is based on simplicity?

Israel received specific worship ordinances governing worship occasions such as Passover and the Day of Atonement. What are comparable ordinances given in the New Testament to Christians?

Where in the New Testament is a complete, correct Christian worship assembly described?
