Part Ten
The Parable of the Wedding Feast
Matthew 22:2-14
- The kingdom of heaven is compared to what (verse 2)?
- What did he send his slaves to do (verse 3)? What response did they receive?
- What did the king do a second time (verse 4)?
- What were the responses (verses 5, 6)?
- How did the king react (verse 7)? What did he say of those who refused to come (verse 8)?
- What instructions did he give his slaves (verse 9)?
- What did they do, and who did they bring (verse 10)?
- When the king looked at the guests, what did he see (verse 11)?
- What did the king ask that person (verse 12)? How did the man respond?
- What orders were given the servants (verse 13)?
- What was the lesson (verse 14)?
Things to note about the kingdom of heaven:
- To receive an invitation from a king to attend his son's wedding was to receive an honor. For God to extend the opportunity to a person to be in His presence in the kingdom is an honor.
- First century Israelites, the Jews, had received an early invitation to be a part of God's kingdom. (A king would invite his guests to such a marriage long before the event.)
- First century Israelites, the Jews, refused to honor the invitation when the moment came.
- They refused to honor what God was doing in and through Jesus.
- Some went about their normal business as if God were doing nothing.
- Some murdered the messengers.
- Those who reacted in any of these ways proved themselves unworthy of the invitation.
- Immediately, an invitation was extended to all regardless of who they were.
- The responsibility involved in accepting the invitation was to appear before the king in appropriate dress.
- We must accept the responsibility involved in accepting the invitation.
