Burning Hearts

The Preexistent Messiah

(Revelation 22:13) "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last."

Prophesied

Fulfilled
Before Creation

(Genesis 1:1) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

(Genesis 1:26) Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

(John 1:1-3) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

(Colossians 1:15-17) He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

The Eternal Creator

(Psalms 45:6-7) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

(Psalms 102:25-26) Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. 26 They will perish, but You will endure; Yes, they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will change them, And they will be changed.

(Malachi 3:6) "For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob."

(Hebrews 1:8-12) But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. 9You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions." 10 And: "You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. 11 They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; 12 Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail."

Consistency

(Psalms 102:27) But You are the same, And Your years will have no end.

(Hebrews 13:8) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

In Him All Things Exist

(Proverbs 8:22-32) The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. 23 I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth; 26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, Or the primeval dust of the world. 27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep, 29 When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, 31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men. 32 Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways.

(Hebrews 1:2,3) [God] has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

(Hebrews 7:3) without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

One God

(Deuteronomy 6:4) "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!"

(1 Corinthians 8:6) yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

Messiah's Glory

(John 17:5) "And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was."

Mystery of Godliness

(1 Timothy 3:16) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.

Humble & Exalted

(Philippians 2:5-11) Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Lesson 2

The Preexistent Messiah

(Revelation 22:13) "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last."

Group Discussion Questions

1. Jesus said, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End ..." What makes it difficult for mankind to understand that God has always been and will always be?

2. It has been said that the Old Testament theme is "Someone is coming", the gospels' theme is "Someone has come," and the theme of the remaining New Testament is "Someone is coming again." From Ephesians 2:1-6 discuss the theme that runs throughout the Bible.

3. In Genesis 1:1 & 26 the Hebrew word for God is Elohim, a plural noun. Read also John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:15-17. Discuss how all of these verses affirm the pre-existence of Christ.

4. Who is "the Word" from John 1:1? Why is that term used?

5. Read Psalms 45:6-7; 102:25-36; Malachi 3:6; and Hebrews 1:8-12. What characteristics of Christ's kingdom are emphasized in these verses? How do these characteristics encourage you in living out your days here on earth?

6. From Malachi 3:6, Psalm 102:27, Hebrews1:12, and Hebrews 13:8, what is the importance of God being unchanging, "the same yesterday, today & forever?"

7. What caused the author of Proverbs 8:22-32 to rejoice? How can these same things bring similar joy for us?

8. Through what means has Christ been made the ultimate authority? (Hebrews 1:2&3.) Discuss some of the implications of this fact.

9. What is the significance of Christ's sitting down at the right hand of the Majesty on high?

10. What is an image? For whom is Christ the image? What can be seen in that image? (Colossians 1:15-17)

11. Discuss what it means on a personal level to have Christ in His role as priest continually. (Hebrews 7:3)

12. Read Deuteronomy 6:4 and I Corinthians 8:6. Expound on the ideas of the "oneness" of the Godhead.

13. When was God manifested in the flesh? (John 17:5 & I Timothy 3:16)

14. Looking deeper. The Hebrew word for glory is Shikinah. From the Old Testament passages of Exodus 24:16; 33:17-23; 34:29-35; & 40:34, and the New Testament passages of John 17:5 and I Timothy 3:16, discuss the glory of God.

15. Read Philippians 2:5-11. Why did God exalt Christ? Knowing that God exalted Christ, what can be learned about submission from the verses? How difficult is this for you in practice? How does Christ's example make it easier to submit?

16. At what point will every knee bow and every tongue confess Jesus as Lord?

17. What difference does it make if Christ the Messiah existed before His birth and before creation?
