The Messiah's Lineage & Birth

Prophesied

Fulfilled
Son of Abraham

(Genesis 22:18) "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."

(Matthew 1:1) The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham

(Acts 3:25) "You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.'"

Star Out of Jacob

(Numbers 24:17) "I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel, And batter the brow of Moab, And destroy all the sons of tumult.

(Matthew 2:2) saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him."

Tribe of Judah

(Genesis 49:10) The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.

(Luke 3:33) the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,

(Hebrews 7:14) For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.

Son of David

(Isaiah 9:7) Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

(Jeremiah 23:5) "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.

(Matthew 1:1) The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:

(Romans 1:2-4) which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures,3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead

Throne of David Established Forever

(1 Chronicles 17:11-14) "And it shall be, when your days are fulfilled, when you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your seed after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son; and I will not take My mercy away from him, as I took it from him who was before you. 14 And I will establish him in My house and in My kingdom forever; and his throne shall be established forever."

(Luke 1:32-33) "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

Born of a Virgin

(Isaiah 7:14) "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."

(Luke 1:31-35) "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end." 34 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?" 35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God."

Born in Bethlehem

(Micah 5:2) "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting."

(Matthew 2:1-6) Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." 3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: 6 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.'"

Flight into Egypt

(Hosea 11:1) "When Israel was a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son."

(Matthew 2:14-15) When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."

Slaughter of the Children

(Jeremiah 31:15) Thus says the LORD: "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted for her children, Because they are no more."

(Matthew 2:16-18) Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more."

Born a King

(Jeremiah 30:9) But they shall serve the LORD their God, And David their king, Whom I will raise up for them.

(Luke 1:69) And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David

(John 12:13) took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: "Hosanna! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' The King of Israel!"

(John 18:37) Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

Names

(Isaiah 9:6) For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

(Luke 1:31-33) "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

(Psalms 110:1) The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."

(Luke 2:11) "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

(John 13:13-15) "You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am 14"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 "For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

(Jeremiah 30:21) Their nobles shall be from among them, And their governor shall come from their midst; Then I will cause him to draw near, And he shall approach Me; For who is this who pledged his heart to approach Me?' says the LORD.

(Matthew 2:6) 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.'"

(Isaiah 7:14) "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

(Matthew 1:22-23) So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

Lesson 4

The Messiah's Lineage & Birth

Group Discussion Questions

Genealogy is the skeletal framework of the Old Testament and binds the New Testament with the Old. Priests who could not trace their ancestry were put out of their office (Nehemiah 7:64). Any Jew ought to have been able to trace his genealogy for "all Israel were reckoned by genealogies," (I Chronicles 9:1). These records were kept in the cities as public property. The records not only prepared the way for the Messiah, but constituted each Israelite's title to his farm or home. These genealogies were destroyed during the plunder of Jerusalem by Titus in 70 A.D.

1. As promised to Abraham 2000 years before the New Testament fulfillment, how are all the nations blessed by his seed?

2. Read Acts 3:17-26. Name the prophets you know who proclaimed these days as mentioned in 3:24. From verse 26, what was the purpose for God sending His Servant?

3. Who saw His star in the East at the time of Christ's birth? How did this fulfill the prophecy from Numbers 24:17?

4. Read Matthew 1:1 & 2 and Luke 3:33 & 34. Trace Christ's lineage from Abraham through Judah.

5. David was the royal ancestor most associated with the reign of the Messiah. Compare Christ with David.

6. David was promised that his throne would be established forever. How was this accomplished?

7. What was unique about Christ's conception?

8. How did the chief priests and scribes know the answer to give when Herod asked where the Christ was to be born (Matthew 2:1-6)?

9. From the following Old and New Testament scriptures, trace the places where Christ spent His first few years.

10. What circumstances led to the flight into Egypt?

11. What is the role of a king? How does Jesus fulfill that role in your life?

12. We are familiar with our Savior's personal name, Jesus, which means Salvation of Jehovah. The name Christ is the Greek equivalent of Messiah, meaning "anointed." Prophets, priests, and kings of old were anointed. Jesus Christ combines all three offices in Himself.
Discuss how Jesus embodies the names:

(One who goes first, leads the way, chief in war)

  • King . . . . . Jeremiah 23:5 & Matthew 2:2; Luke 23:2; John 12:15

  • Emmanuel . . . . . Isaiah 7:14 & Matthew 1:22, 23; Matthew 28:20; John 1:14
(Also Immanuel - "God with us")

  • Lord . . . . . Psalms 110:1 & Luke 2:11; John 13:13-15
