BUILDING A
HEALTHY FAITH
Study Guide
by David Chadwell
Lesson Nine
To place the class in my personal focus this week:
- Read Matthew 7:6-12 at least once a day.
- Find moments in the day when you can think about those verses.
- Think of specific reasons that make it difficult for us to place our daily confidence and trust in God.
- Think of specific reasons that should motivate us to place our daily confidence and trust in God.
Questions:
- Explain the basic point of the instruction in verse 6 not to give holy things to the dogs.
- How does this instruction relate to the instruction not to judge?
- What three things are we instructed to do in verse 7? Why?
- Why must we take the initiative?
- What two things will a loving parent not do to his/her child?
- We each struggle with the reality of evil in our lives. There is no evil in God. If we who struggle with evil know how to give good gifts to our children, what does that tell us about God? Why?
- According to verse 12, to whom are we to give good gifts?" What does that mean?
- How are we to determine how to treat other people?
- What are "the Law and the Prophets?" Remember Matthew was written to Jewish people.
- Explain your understanding of Jesus' statement that (a) if a person treats others as he/she wants to be treated, (b) in doing that he/she fully satisfies the instructions of the Law and the Prophets.
- Explain any relationship that you see between Jesus' emphasis on the fact that God knows how to do good to His children and Paul's point in Romans 8:28.
